Sandpoint Wrestlers Whip Post Falls

Sandpoint won 10 consecutive matches, five by pins, to topple Post Falls 56-16 Wednesday night in Inland Empire League high school wrestling.

Sandpoint won every match from 119 pounds to 189.

Sandpoint’s Mick Coon defeated Brian Moretz 4-3 at 135 with an escape and takedown early in the third round.

Legion baseball

Randy Shipman has been hired as the Coeur d’Alene American Legion coach.

Shipman replaces Tracy Turrell, whose contract was not renewed.

Shipman, who teaches at Whitefish High School in Whitefish, Mont., has coached American Legion for 11 years.

Basketball

District winners were crowned recently in the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest.

The winners advance to state, which will be held Feb. 12 in Boise.

The winners by age group were:

8-9: Boys - Justin Vaughn (Stidwell Elementary, Sandpoint) 19 of 30 shots; Girls - Andrea Bordelon (Fernan Elementary, Coeur d’Alene) 16-30.

10-11: Boys - Korbin Keller (Kellogg Middle School, Pinehurst) 15-25; Girls - Jessica Smalley (Borah Elementary, Coeur d’Alene) 21-30.

12-13: Boys - Ryan Gallia (Betty Kiefer Elementary, Rathdrum) 20-25; Girls - Vanessa Poulson (Kellogg Middle School, Kellogg) 19-25.
