Fishermen Fall Through Ice Twice

Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies are reminding people to watch for thin ice on lakes, after two fishermen fell through ice in Mokins Bay on Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff’s deputies said they received a call around 1:30 that Michael W. Booth, 35, of Post Falls and Daniel G. Peterson, 37, of Rathdrum had fallen into the lake.

While deputies were on their way, a citizen helped the two men out by throwing them a rope, according to police reports. However, Booth and Peterson decided to go back out to retrieve their fishing gear and fell through the ice again.

Deputies and medics rescued both men, who were not wearing life jackets.

Both Booth and Peterson were suffering from hypothermia, but refused medical treatment, according to reports.
