Ford Phelps Leads Eagles Past Psu

Tracy Ford Phelps scored a game-high 20 points and Julie Moore pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds Saturday as Eastern Washington held on for a 58-52 win over Portland State in Portland.

Eastern (8-12, 4-6 Big Sky) matched its win total from last year and picked up its first road victory in eight tries this season.

Eastern led 50-30 with 11:07 remaining but went scoreless for the next 9:38 as Portland State (7-14, 5-5) closed to within 50-46 with 2:29 left.

Eastern’s lead was 54-52 with 41 seconds remaining before a jumper by Moore and two free throws from Michelle Demetruk kept the Eagles in front of the Vikings.

Jessica Malone scored 23 points and Melanie Tipps added 16, but the Bulldogs committed 29 turnovers and were overrun by the Lions in Los Angeles.

Rosa Bernasconi set the LMU single-game scoring record with 39. She was 13 of 23 from the field, including 5 of 11 on her 3-pointers, and was 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. For good measure, she added eight rebounds, three assists, one block and three steals in 38 minutes. She did not have any turnovers.

The Sasquatch, ranked third in the NWAACC poll, struggled with their shooting and lost to No. 5 Wenatchee Valley for the second time this season.

The win gives Wenatchee Valley (23-2, 7-1) possession of first place in the East Division. Spokane (21-3, 7-2) fell to second place.

Heather Ridnour and Amy George led the Sasquatch with 13 points each. However, they combined to shoot only 10 for 31. Their .323 shooting was actually better than their teammates as the Sasquatch shot 28 percent.
