Take A Chance On ‘Funky’

Nathaniel Eng, Lewis & Clark

I believe many people will shy away from purchasing “The Funky Precedent.” The nonchalant red cover and array of underground musical talents might frighten people into believing that it will be another unused, unlistened to album.

This CD is a collaboration of various musical acts that come together in aid of the music education programs in the Bay Area’s Mission High School and Los Angeles County’s Fremont High and Manchester Elementary.

The unique sound of this album stems from the wide range of acts. Not only does it feature straight hip hop tracks and turntablism, it includes African hybrids, acoustic sound and Latino-Angeles soul.

Overall, there is no song that sticks out on the album. However, it is solid in sound. Every track is well produced and the album flows well.

The musical cast consists of scarcely heard artists, such as Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Styles of Beyond and the Beat Junkies.

“The Funky Precedent” is a well-rounded CD featuring the talents of a whole array of artists. I feel that the album is worth picking up, but maybe not for $15.
