WASHINGTON
Adams County Othello
The U.S. Department of Justice sent investigators to Othello recently to gather evidence on the county primary election of 1998. In that election, WSP Trooper Abe Ramirez was asked by citizens to act as an interpreter. Ramirez, who had campaigned for sheriff candidate Roberto Guerrero, was told to leave the polls or be arrested. The department is looking into whether the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was violated.
Ferry County Daisy
A community karoake night will be held at the Lakeside Inn Feb. 12. A Mexican dinner will be served, featuring smothered burritos, beef enchiladas, Spanish rice, salad and chips and salsa.
Grant County Quincy
A local man will spend four years in prison for chasing his girlfriend and sideswiping her car. Shawn Michael Baty, 23, was found guilty of two counts of second-degree assault and one of first-degree malicious mischief.
Lincoln County Davenport
Davenport is again without a police chief. Newly elected Mayor Chuck Johnston fired Chief Charlie Varain last week. Varain, hired as an officer in 1995, was given the chief’s badge in 1998. The city is advertising for another officer, which would bring its force up to two officers and five reserves. Johnston says all shifts will continue to be covered despite Varain’s absence.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Slowly but surely, Pend Oreille County elections are being converted to vote-by-mail. North county residents have been mailing in their ballots since November 1999. The upcoming presidential primary on Feb. 29 will have all but five precincts voting by mail.
Spokane County Spokane
The Washington State Board for Judicial Administration elected Spokane County Superior Court Judge James M. Murphy to a newly created position of member chair. Murphy also serves as president of the Superior Court Judges Association.
Stevens County
Vera Yangolenko is the first student from the local English as a Second Language classes to become a U.S. citizen. Yangolenko recently passed her citizenship exams. She has been taking night classes to learn English, hoping to become a citizen and get a better job. In Russia, she was a professional topographer. Here she has been cleaning homes. Yangolenko, her husband and five children were religious refugees.
Whitman County Pullman
The annual Agricultural Outlook Conference and Luncheon will be held Feb. 29. The conference begins at 8 a.m. with topics including “Outlook for Small Grains,” “Save Our Dams” and guest speakers Mark Gold, Mike Armstrong, Tom Flint and Jon Newkirk. Benewah County St. Maries
Heidi Webber was hired as clinic manager for the St. Maries Family Medicine. She will oversee finances and personnel. Webber graduated from St.Maries High School in 1985 and has managed clinics in Montana.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Vicki Blake has studied vocal techniques for more than 10 years and is now starting a children’s choir. Appointments for auditions for kids 8 to 13 years old are being made in mid-February for the Bonners Ferry Children’s Choir. To schedule an appointment call Blake at (208) 267-3294.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Panhandle Health District I reported 10 businesses in Kootenai County failed to perform third quarter coliform bacteria test required by the state. They also failed to notify the public of their failure to test. The businesses include Coeur d’Alene North KOA, Harding Acres Tracts Water Association, Hern Water System, Lake Haven Owners Association, Latter Day Saints of Post Falls, Rock Springs Water Association, Sherwood Forest, Silver Beach Marina, State Line Village and Third Addition Water Association. Fourth-quarter tests were performed by all except Silver Beach Marina.
Latah County Moscow
During the recent City Council meeting it was decided planning a U.S. Highway 95 bypass around Moscow will be a priority issue next year. Council members also discussed this year’s priorities including, flood plain management, an ordinance to regulate city lighting and training for council members and planning and zoning commissioners.
Shoshone County Wallace
Silver Valley residents have the chance to design a T-shirt for the Heritage Festival. The logo must contain a street scene from historic Wallace and ghost figures of May Hutton and President Teddy Roosevelt.
