Sfcc Student Leader Loses Re-Election Bid
The controversial student body president of Spokane Falls Community College has lost her bid for re-election.
April Stevens, who is under review for allegedly having referred to a faculty member with a racial epithet last fall, lost in Tuesday’s student government election after she ran as a write-in candidate.
Students overwhelmingly voted for Cassie Taylor, a 19-year-old photography student who will take over as associated student president in April.
Taylor received 140 of the 267 valid votes cast. Stevens received 13 votes. Kathleen Justice and Reta Mackin, the two other candidates, received 61 and 53 votes, respectively.
Stevens, 39, allegedly used a slur when talking to another student about an associate dean who is African American. A student judiciary board is being formed to investigate the incident. Stevens denies having used the term.
As the new student body president, Taylor said she wants to initiate a campus dialogue with open forums to create more diversity awareness.
