Shadle Park Turns Tables On G-Prep Streaking Highlanders Upset No. 4 Pups, Tighten Gsl Race

For Mike Haugen and his fourth-ranked Gonzaga Prep Bullpups there is no such thing as a good loss - especially after winning their first 17 Greater Spokane League boys basketball games this season.

But Shadle Park’s 65-53 win Friday night before a turn-away crowd at Shadle Park was just the thing to promote the sport.

First, there were all those fans who couldn’t get into the gym 15 minutes before tipoff and had to stand in the hallway and listen to the crowd roar.

Then there are the ramifications for the final week of the season.

The Highlanders’ 11th consecutive victory put the top of the boys standings in a vise grip. Prep has one loss, Ferris two and Shadle three. Tuesday, Prep and Ferris play at Spokane Falls. Thursday, it’s Ferris and Shadle at the Arena. The top two teams earn automatic berths into the regional tournament.

Shadle Park set up the stretch run with an about face at halftime.

Drilled 21-10 on the boards in the first half, the Highlanders dominated the second 25-9.

Shadle Park coach Darcy Weisner raised his voice at halftime and the Highlanders listened.

“He just told us rebounding is the key to the game,” senior guard Demetrius Scott said. “Our offense was good, our defense was good, we needed to rebound.”

“I thought, as a coach, we didn’t do enough to slow them down in the first half,” Weisner said. “That’s what my enthusiastic presentation was about (at halftime) and they came out and did it.”

The first half was all about rebounding and Greg Johnson, who had 15 of his 19 points.

“We talked about Johnson,” Weisner said. “He hurt us on dribble penetration.”

The Highlanders went on a 16-4 run in the third quarter, turning a 30-24 deficit into a 44-38 lead.

“At this time of year, good teams, like Prep, know what they need to do,” Weisner said, putting his team in that category. “Adjustments are more mental than physical. We just needed to go out and play harder. No magic.”

Steve Gabriel had two baskets in a 6-0 spurt at the end of the third and he opened the fourth with a rebound basket. When Scott followed with a pull-up jumper from the foul line, the Highlanders were up 10.

Chris Bond, who had 16 points, stopped that run, but Scott quickly countered with a 3-pointer to start 9-2 burst that pushed the lead to 15. Shadle hit enough free throws down the stretch to keep it comfortable.

“I thought they rebounded much better … they defended us better,” Haugen said. “We didn’t shoot as well, obviously, and we didn’t play near as good of defense. We may have tightened up after a while, but they played real well.”

Scott poured in 16 points, 14 more than in the first meeting between the two teams, a 53-47 loss for the Highlanders in which he had just seven shots.

“Demetrius had a better game than the first time,” steady sophomore point guard Danny Pariseau said. “That’s what we needed. Last time they only beat us by six.”

Pariseau’s comments reflected his game. He dished off to all his teammates. He pointed to Gabriel’s career-high 18 points and five second-half rebounds by Shaun Rowe despite foul trouble.

But Pariseau was the glue, handling the Gonzaga Prep pressure with minimal turnovers contributing 12 points.
