Adams County

Ritzville

Ritzville High School cross country runner Mike Way won a fifth-place medal at a 10-kilometer race in Zhaoqing City, China, on New Year’s Day. More than 1,800 runners took part in the race.

Grant County

Coulee City

The city has received state money to build sidewalks from the marina on Banks Lake to downtown. Thousands visit the city-owned park and marina, but relatively few walk downtown and contribute to the economy. Officials hope a sidewalk system will change that.

Lincoln County

Reardan

The Reardan-Edwall school board is considering a bond issue this spring. The district has been trying to pass a bond for a middle school building for a decade, but voters have turned it down. Because of large classes, the district will ask again for funds. The district has already planned a $730,000 maintenance and operations levy for March 14.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

Look for Pend Orielle County to bloom gloriously this spring. The master gardener program - part of the WSU Cooperative Extension - had 29 graduates. All attended 40 hours of horticulture classes from soil science to entomology and landscaping.

Spokane County

Spokane

Trustees for the coming year on the Spokane Parks and Recreation Foundation board are Gerry Bulger, president; Sue Bradley, vice president, and George Girvin, treasurer. Board members are Carol S. Barber, Jane Bowen, Phillip J. Carstens, Steve Clark, Judy Cole, Nate Greene, Dennis Hession, Steve Jones, Charlie Keturakat, Jim Meyer, Cajer Neely and Ron Sims. The foundation oversees private fund-raising and gifts for Spokane park facilities.

A local task force to fight sexual abuse of children, Kids First, has released statistics showing the group has driven up prosecution rates. In 1990, the prosecution rates for this crime were 11.8 percent. That rate jumped to 26 percent in 1994, just two years after Kids First began.

Whitman County

Garfield

Garfield Dollars for Scholars Foundation awarded a full scholarship to WSU based on profits raised from community cheesecake sales. Volunteers raised more than $11,000 for the local, need-based scholarship program. This year’s $4,000 scholarship went to Tom Doebler, 17, of Garfield. Doebler is a Garfield-Palouse High School senior active in band, honor society and football.

High School senior Amanda Kachelmier was selected to attend the Northwest Basketball Camp girls senior tour. Selection was based on athletic ability and character. Weight-limit and speed restrictions are posted on three roads - Bayview Road, Blacktail Road and Clagstone Road - due to ice and rain. Weight limits are 250 pounds per square inch or 98 pounds per centimeter tire width times the number of tires. Maximum speed is 30 mph. Signs posted with a red ribbon indicate limits are active. No early morning or overnight hauling is permitted. Signs posted with a green ribbon identify an open road.

Bonners Ferry

Cheryl and Joe Stockdale have opened the Country Kitchen on the South Hill. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch and specializes in homemade food including pies, biscuits, cinnamon rolls and fresh soups.

Kootenai County

Worley

The Worley City Park Improvement Committee is raising money to build an additional basketball court and purchase a picnic table for the park. The cost of the project is $11,600. The state Division of Environmental Quality is seeking public comment on an operating permit for Bennett Lumber Products Inc., a saw and planing mill. DEQ issues air quality permits. Shoshone County

The First Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (CASA) needs 15 volunteers for Shoshone County. A free 32-hour certification class is held at the convenience of the volunteers. The class begins March 20 and prepares volunteers to represent abused, abandoned and neglected children in court. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, have good communication skills and will have their criminal history checked. To register call Rhonda at (208) 667-9165.

Libby

Inmates at the county jail no longer get free health care or nonprescription medication. In August, the county changed its policy following a successful change at the Kalispell jail. The county there charged inmates and saved taxpayers $852 last year. The jail usually houses 20 to 25 inmates who are now less likely to request doctor visits needlessly since they have to foot the bill, officials said.
