Valley Catholic Schoolchildren Help In Hundreds Of Ways
Students in the Spokane Valley’s Catholic schools have been busy since September collecting everything from mittens to soap to books for distribution to needy people in the community.
The effort by the Valley students is part of a larger, citywide effort called “100 Ways in 100 Days,” in which students in all 11 Spokane area Catholic schools were challenged to collect items in groups of 100 or more during the first 100 days of school.
Overall, the effort resulted in more than 13,000 items collected and donated to programs and services run by Catholic Charities.
Faculty and student representatives from each school joined Bishop William Skylstad for a short prayer service last week marking their achievement.
Students in different grades at St. John Vianney Catholic School collected different things. Preschoolers gathered 100 sponges; kindergarten students gathered 100 children’s mittens; first-graders collected 100 markers; second-graders brought in 200 wash cloths; third-graders brought in 100 bars of soap; fourth-graders collected 100 rolls of paper towels; fifth-graders gathered 50 bars of soap and 50 packs of deoderant; sixth-graders brought in 200 bars of hand soap; seventh-graders brought in 100 cans of soup; and eighth-graders gathered 100 children’s books.
Students at St. Paschal’s Catholic School collected 200 cans of soup, 100 boxes of crayons, 100 writing tablets, 100 pencils and 200 packages of diapers.
Students at St. Mary’s Catholic School collected 400 boxes of tissues. Programs on the receiving end of the students’ generosity include Housing Social Services, St. Margaret’s Shelter, Senior Services, Childbirth and Parenting Alone, Refugee Resettlement Program, Partners for Community Living, St. Anne Child and Family Center and the House of Charity.
