Finalists Named For Police Chief

Four finalists have been chosen from among 17 applicants to be Kellogg’s new police chief.

A committee consisting of the mayor, council members, business people and other city residents chose the four men late Wednesday. They are: Noah Van Butsel of Lincoln, Neb.; Frederick Gardy of Ridgefield, Conn.; Michael Sanford of Montclaire, Va.; and Larry Irvine of Kingston, Idaho.

Irvine, a Kellogg native, retired from the Las Vegas Police Department with the rank of sergeant. The occupations of the other finalists were not available Thursday.

The finalists will be interviewed next Wednesday at 3 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting is open to the public, said council member Ken Schueman. Members of the committee will submit written questions to chairman Dave Porto, who will ask them, Schueman said.

The new chief will replace John Crawford, who was not reappointed in January. Mayor Roger Mangum cited a lack of confidence in Crawford and the expectation that new council members would not support his reappointment.
