Nasdaq Sets Record
The Nasdaq composite index surged past 4,500 for the first time Thursday as technology stocks withstood a warning from Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan that interest rates are heading higher. Banks, retailers and blue chip stocks, more vulnerable to rate changes, ended lower and left the overall market mixed.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 121.22 to 4,548.87, surpassing its record close of 4,485.63, reached last Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average, off more than 100 points in earlier trading, finished down 46.84 at 10,514.57. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was up 0.58 at 1,388.25.
