Computer Glitch Cancels Flights

From Staff

Phoenix-based America West Airlines was forced to cancel more than 100 flights nationwide Thursday and Friday after a computer system that prepares flight plans for pilots and crews quit working.

Several thousand passengers were affected by delays or cancellations nationwide and about 1,000 passengers were forced to camp out at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport.

Nowack said the problem was fixed late Thursday evening.

She said Friday the disruption will have no impact on plans to start daily service March 7 with four flights into Spokane International Airport. The flights include three daily to Phoenix and one to Las Vegas, said Nowack.

The computer that malfunctioned provides weather information, data on the planes and flight crew instructions.
