Two More Missile Subs To Be Based In State

Two Trident submarines and their crews now based at Kings Bay, Ga., will be transferred to Washington state in October 2002, the Navy says.

The USS Pennsylvania and USS Kentucky will move to Naval Submarine Base Bangor on Hood Canal as the Navy shuffles and shrinks its ballistic missile sub fleet.

The subs will fill vacancies as the Navy pulls from service the four oldest Trident subs based at Bangor: USS Ohio, USS Michigan, USS Florida and USS Georgia. Bangor would then have six Trident submarines, compared to eight now, while Kings Bay would be reduced from its current 10 subs to eight.
