Whitworth Overwhelms Pioneers

Women’s basketball

Jamie Wakefield scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to spark the Whitworth Pirates to a 74-49 victory over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in Northwest Conference women’s basketball action at the Whitworth Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Whitworth (16-7, 10-4) forced 26 turnovers and held the Pioneers (8-15, 3-11) to 27 percent shooting from the floor.

The Pirates used an 18-5 run midway through the second half to turn a 38-28 lead into a 56-33 advantage with 10:44 to play.

Whitworth guard Emily Stuenkel hit 3 of 5 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

Sephora Scoubes scored a game-high 21 points, 15 in the first half and four in the final 2 minutes, to spark the Hornets (6-17, 4-8) to a Big Sky Conference win over the visiting Eagles (8-14, 4-8).

Eastern overcame a 12-point second-half deficit and took a 62-61 lead on a Janelle Ruen basket with 3:44 left in the game.

Scoubes hit a jumper to make it 63-62 and after a Ruen free throw tied it up, Scoubes nailed another jumper.

St. Mary’s 76, Gonzaga 68

Rebounding was the difference in Moraga, Calif., as the Gaels (18-7, 10-2) handed the Bulldogs (9-16, 2-10) their seventh straight West Coast Conference defeat.

St. Mary’s outrebounded Gonzaga 54-27.

Jessica Malone’s 18 points, five rebounds and six assists paced Gonzaga.
