Sheriff Honors Volunteers
FROM FOR THE RECORD (Friday, February 25, 2000): Correction Wrong day: Spokane County Sheriff Mark Sterk will present awards to employees, citizens and SCOPE volunteers at the annual awards ceremony today at 3:30 p.m. at the Spokane County commissioners’ hearing room in the Public Works Building. A story in Wednesday’s paper had the day wrong.
Virginia Smith, 80, has never missed a meeting of the Newman Lake SCOPE substation since the program started. On Wednesday, she and other volunteers were honored by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office for their work.
Smith was a student in the first Sheriff Community Oriented Policing Program basic training class and single-handedly works as the committee to remind members of meetings and functions. Smith has worked at the Spokane Interstate Fair and was the driving force in the Citizens on Patrol project.

Concerned Citizen awards went to: Amy Hoyt, Rick Majors, Frederick Fritts, Jesse Knutson, Michael Cosentino, Wayne and Wendi Stoken, Dan T. Statton, Kevin Longmeier and Landon Crecelious.
Good Samaritan awards: David Mowry, Michael Webb, Kenneth Whitney, Jeffery Ward, Ryan Evans, Eva Montano, Liza Erickson and Randall Dismukes.
Dick Morton was named Sheriff’s Volunteer of the Year. Morton has worked in the photo lab of the Identification Unit since 1996. For four hours every Monday, he separates and files film. When he is done there, he often helps out in other units.
The 16 SCOPE stations in the county each nominated a person as their volunteer of the year. They are: Jackie Ash, Edgecliff; Diana Somervilee, Fairwood; Ed McGee, Mead; Virginia Smith, Newman Lake; William Weiss, Spring Hill; Ron Burris, Espanola; Ann Richey, University; Rick Vermeers, Central Valley; Ray Westlake, Fairfield; Buck and Cora George, Deer Park; Teresa Campbell, Trentwood; Glen Leimkuhler, SCOPE East; and Paul Nilson, West Valley.
