Tuition Increase Approved For Ewu

From Staff

Eastern Washington University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a 3.6 percent tuition increase Friday for in-state students for the next school year.

In-state undergraduate students will pay $2,793 in annual tuition under the new rate, up from the current $2,700. Meanwhile, in-state graduate students will pay $4,476, compared to $4,326.

Ordinarily, tuition hikes at the state’s public colleges and universities are set by the Legislature. Last year, however, lawmakers granted local tuition-setting authority to the schools’ governing boards - allowing tuition for 1999-2000 to be increased by up to 4.6 percent, and then up to an additional 3.6 percent for 2000-2001.

This school year, Eastern opted for a 3 percent increase, the lowest increase among the state’s public institutions. Most other schools sought the maximum 4.6 percent increase.
