Othello

Dr. Randel Bunch will remain on the Othello Community Hospital Board of Directors. Questions were raised recently concerning conflict of interest with an acting doctor holding a board position. It was felt Bunch may not be able to reprimand fellow doctors or look at some situations objectively. A group of citizens attended the latest hospital board meeting, giving their support to Bunch and saying a physician on the board is a positive move.

Ferry County

Republic

Shaquille O’Neal could use a little coaching from Derek Gianukakis. The youngster has won his second state free-throw title.

Gianukakis nailed 22 of 25 free throws in the 10- and 11-year-old division of the state free throw contest. Now, it’s on to Portland for the regional shootout on March 18. Last year, Gianukakis went to nationals. O’Neal is at the bottom among NBA free-throw shooters.

Grand Coulee

Local anglers are jumping for joy. An unpopular law prohibiting fishermen from keeping landlocked salmon has been changed. Anglers can now keep two Kokanee, wild or not, while fishing Lake Roosevelt. Before, the Department of Fish and Wildlife said only hatchery-raised fish could be kept. These fish have their adipose fins clipped off, unlike wild Kokanee.

Harrington

The National Weather Service is thankful for Gene Cronrath. The local man has been a weather-watcher since he was a kid, and has spent many years as a volunteer observer to the weather service. The Harrington weather monitoring station was established in 1956. By November of 1961, it was relocated to Cronrath’s home and he’s been at it ever since. His records are very complete and help define Eastern Washington’s weather patterns.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

The Pend Oreille Players are holding auditions for “Fiddler on the Roof,” set in turn-of-the-century Russia. The musical comedy has several roles for men and women, including chorus-only spots. Auditions will be held Monday , Wednesday and Friday at Sadie Halstead Middle School. Call (509) 447-2180 for information.

Colville

The local newspaper is warning citizens about a group of con artists working the county. The Colville Statesman-Examiner says a number of illegal pyramid schemes, also known as “multi-level marketing ventures” are operating in the area. Consumer complaints show the elderly are a major target, as are immigrants, church members and employees of large companies. Residents are warned against joining.

Whitman County

Uniontown

The community of Uniontown is holding its 47th annual Uniontown Sausage Dinner on March 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event features locally made German sausage dinner also includes sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, applesauce, pie and coffee. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children and $1 for children 5 and younger. The dinner is an all-volunteer event where townspeople and surrounding area farmers and volunteers gather three days before the dinner to begin preparations.

St. Maries

Church of the Nazarene property is leveled and seeded in preparation for a community soccer/multi-purpose field. Completion isn’t expected this year due to a lack of funds for well drilling. The Sandpoint Independent Highway District submitted to county commissioners a resolution to transfer a portion of disputed operating funds into a special untouchable levy account.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

Hunter education courses will be offered by the Idaho Fish and Game Department in March, May and July at the indoor gun range on State Highway 2. The course is required to obtain a hunting license if born on or after Jan. 1, 1975, and applicants must be at least 12 years old. Registration is $8, call Roundheels Sports at 267-3964.

Kootenai County

Post Falls

“Wine, Stein, and Dine” is the annual fund raiser for the nonprofit Post Falls Education Foundation. Wine, champagnes and microbrews, appetizers, desserts plus a silent auction and live entertainment are included. The event is set for 7-10 p.m. March 4 at Cavanaughs-Templin’s Resort. Advance tickets are $30 and are available at Washington Trust Bank, Northwest Home Medical and the Corner Trading Post or $35 at the door. Money raised will be used as grants for creative classroom teaching.

Latah County

Potlatch

Rachel Allwine, a Potlatch high school senior, is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from Wal-Mart. Allwine was selected for her success in academics and leadership activities. Tasha Swinney of Palouse was runner-up and Nathan Queener of Troy placed third in the competition.

Shoshone County

Wallace

“Leap Year Coney Feed” is sponsored by Shoshone County elected officials and will partially benefit the Idaho Association of Counties Scholarship Fund. The lunch includes a coney, chips and a pop for $4 and is set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday at the Shoshone Public Safety Building in Wallace.
