American Chad Carvin won the men’s 400-meter freestyle in 3 minutes, 45.47 seconds in the opening day of a FINA World Cup swim meet.

Kelly Stefanyshyn of Canada, gold medalist in the women’s 100-meter backstroke at the Pan Am Games in August, won the 200 backstroke.
