Rams 3Rd In Wrestling Tournament
Riverside wrestlers traveled to coach Randy Miller’s old stomping grounds and came home with a third-place tournament finish.
The Rams scored 130.5 points to place behind Tonasket (150.5) and Othello (147.5) at the Royal Christmas Tournament Dec. 30 at Royal City High School. Miller coached at Royal before returning to Riverside this year.
Three upper-weights wrestlers led the way for the North Side team.
James Nuesse pinned four successive 275-pound foes, only once going to the second round of his matches. That was against Columbia-Burbank state placer Joe Sloan in the semifinals. Two of Nuesse’s pins took less than a minute.
Spencer Murphy won the 189-pound championship, also winning four matches - two over state veterans and two by pin.
Dustin Busse reached the finals at 215 pounds before losing by pin with just 13 seconds remaining in his title bout against returning state placer Johnny Hernandez of Warden. Busse beat state veteran Steven Konrad of Liberty Bell in the semifinals.
Riverside fourth placers in the tournament were Travis Spackman, 112, Casey Bullen, 145, and Mike Norton, 160.
David Cato, 119, and Kevin Bradford-Parish, 152, placed sixth.
