Washington State University has named Warwick M. Bayly interim dean of its College of Veterinary Medicine. Bayly, a professor of veterinary clinical sciences, succeeds the previous interim dean, Terry McElwain, who is going on sabbatical leave. Dean Emeritus Borje Gustafsson retired in 1998. Bayly’s appointment is for an indefinite period while a search for a permanent dean continues. Veterinary college dean searches are hampered nationwide by a lack of qualified applicants who must choose between an administrative career vs. more-lucrative jobs in other sectors of veterinary medicine. But Bayly stressed that because of the college’s mature, stable faculty, progress and productivity continues within the college despite the vacancy.
