A Heady Victory For Ferris Saxons Focus On Task To Remain Unbeaten

Second meetings between rivals can be difficult for the team that won the first time. Chuck the Chicken helped Ferris take care of that.

With the hoopla surrounding the South Hill Rubber Chicken spirit game, which drew 6,835 people to the Arena on Friday night, the unbeaten Saxons knew they had to concentrate in their Greater Spokane League basketball matchup.

With the same four underclassmen scoring in double figures as in the season-opening first meeting, Ferris improved to 9-0 with a 68-49 win over Lewis and Clark. Yet LC got the consolation prize, maintaining possession of the coveted chicken.

“We look at it as a different thing,” said Ferris junior Jordan Bursch, who scored 15 points. “You can throw out the records, it’s all emotion.”

Ferris scored the first nine points, including a dunk by 6-foot-7 sophomore Sean Mallon, who was called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim. That led to three quick fouls for the Saxons’ leading scorer, who still finished with 16 points. But Bursch scored six points in the first quarter and Ferris opened a 20-10 lead.

“The first game and this game we got off to a slow start,” said LC coach Terry Reed, referring also to the Tigers’ 77-56 season-opening loss to the Saxons. “As the game continued, we started to catch back up, but we were just worn down after a while.

“They are big bodies and they keep bringing them in.”

LC used an 11-0 run in the last half of the second quarter to pull within 31-27, but Ferris junior Kirby Fike, who scored 14, finished the half with four quick points.

A 7-0 surge midway through the third quarter upped the lead to 13, and LC never recovered.

“Thinking back to some of these games over the years … a lot of things that wouldn’t happen in normal games happened in this game,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “It’s good to get that one out of the way.”

Erik Benzel, another junior, added 12 points for Ferris, which hit 16 of 18 free throws despite being in the Arena for the first time this season.

“Overall, they did a good job,” Gilman said. “We got a good start again, and again we had some pretty good defense in the early going. And they did a good job maintaining an offensive flow when they didn’t have (Mallon) to dump it into.”

Erik Coleman led LC with 16 points, but leading scorer Jonathan Hook was held to one field goal and seven points. Senior Billy Etter went down with a knee injury with 43.8 seconds left in the first quarter. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the same knee in which he dislocated his kneecap, forcing him to miss the first half of the football season.

“It’s easy to say we lost our will when Billy went out,” said Coleman. “But they keep pounding it out. They have so many threats.”
