The last two State 2A champions met Friday night at Newport to inaugurate the Great Northern League season.
Lakeside, the 1998 champion, roared back from an 11-point halftime deficit to topple ‘99 champion Newport 80-60.
Lakeside’s Jenna Giampietri had eight steals during a 25-2 run that began late in the first half. Jen Barcus and Kate Reome combined for 19 of their 33 points during Lakeside’s 33-point third quarter.
Newport’s Melissa Elliott, whose season high had been nine points, scored 22 and had nine rebounds.
The teams combined to hit 74 percent of their free throws (48-65).
