Whitworth Upends Puget Sound

Jamie Wakefield scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Whitworth Pirates to a 64-55 victory over the Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference women’s basketball opener at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma on Friday night.
Puget Sound (6-4) led just once in the contest, at 29-28, 10 seconds into the second half. Whitworth (7-2) jumped out to a 15-point first-half lead before UPS rallied to pull within two at 28-26 at the break.
Emily Stuenkel scored 12 points and Erica Ewart added five assists for Whitworth, which led by as many as 14 points in the second half.
Courtney Leybold topped the Loggers with 15 points.

Washington State couldn’t overcome a dismal first half despite Jen Kerns’ career-high 25-point effort and dropped its Pacific-10 Conference opener to Southern California in Los Angeles.
The Cougars (3-8) shot just 27 percent from the floor in the first half and trailed 34-19.
Kerns scored 19 points in the second-half as WSU went from its worst scoring half of the season to its best (42 points).
Washington State came within seven points with 2:43 remaining in the game, but the Trojans (6-5) hit 8 of 12 free throws down the stretch.
Erica Mashia had 20 points for USC.
“We come out of the chute intimidated,” said WSU coach Jenny Przekwas. “Once we get over that and settle into our game we’ll be all right.”

Guard Nicole Kaczmarski scored 17 points to lead the Bruins (7-4) to a victory over the visiting Huskies (4-9) in a Pac-10 opener.
UCLA led 44-32 at halftime and opened the second half with a 12-0 run that included 10 straight points by Kaczmarski. The freshman hit two 3-pointers, two free throws and a jumper during the run.
Loree Payne scored 17 points for Washington. Megan Franza, who had been averaging 20.9 points a game, finished with 16.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 37-14 lead at the half and cruised to a non-conference win over the visiting Cardinals in Orem, Utah.
Lorricha Broxton, Anna Getz and Heather Cox each tossed in 11 points to pace NIC. The Cardinals shot just 33 percent (23 of 69) from the floor for the game.

Utah Valley State connected on 22 of 33 free-throw attempts for the game, compared to a 6-of-9 effort from NIC.
The Wolverines outscored NIC 15-5 at the free-throw line in the second half when the outscored the Cardinals 39-32.
NIC’s Reggie Johnson led all scorers with 15 points.
