Connection: No Complaints

Spokane’s TV broadcasters reach more than 700,000 households in Canada via cable, but they have never experienced any Canadian “political correctness run amok.”

Neither Barry Barth of KREM-2 nor Bill Stanley of KSPS-7 can remember having any complaints relating to political correctness in programming or advertising.

“I have never spoken to anyone nor had any correspondence on this issue from viewers,” said Barth.

“I can’t remember anything at all,” said Stanley.

Maybe Canadian viewers have had nothing to complain about, or maybe they figure that since it’s American TV, there’s nothing they can do about it anyway.

Both Barth and Stanley said that they definitely hear about it if they air information about Canada or Canadian history that viewers feel is incorrect or biased. Canadian viewers are diligent about anything they consider misinformation about their country.

As for censorship of commercials, this issue is not confined to Canada. Barth said that ABC has said no to several ads using a new 7-Up ad slogan: “Up Yours.”
