Ten years ago: The space shuttle Columbia was launched on a mission to retrieve a drifting scientific satellite.

Five years ago: Trials began for Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman and 11 others accused of conspiring to wage a holy war against the United States. Nine were convicted of seditious conspiracy and two reached plea bargains.

One year ago: Presidential advisers prepared a public and legal defense in President Clinton’s impeachment trial on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.
