Rape Charge Filed In Friday Attack

From Staff

Spokane police arrested a 36-year-old man Friday on a charge that he pulled a woman from a sidewalk into an apartment and raped her.

A 21-year-old woman told officers she was raped Friday evening in a West Central apartment.

Shortly after the woman called police, officers arrested a man who fit the description given by the victim.

Joseph E. Singleton ran from officers when they tried to question him but quickly was caught, police said.

The victim told police her assailant wore red sweat pants and threatened to hurt her if she reported the attack. Officers found red sweats under the khaki slacks Singleton was wearing, police said.

The victim was treated and released at a local hospital.

Singleton was booked into jail on a charge of first-degree rape. In 1998, he was convicted of felony assault and residential burglary, police said.
