Hoping to follow the success of other players at the upcoming Australian Open, Michael Chang decided to use the Auckland Open in Auckland, New Zealand, as a tuneup. His first impressions were good.

Chang beat Zimbabwe’s Byron Black 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1).

Chang said the Rebound Ace court surface, similar to that at the Australian Open at Melbourne that follows the Auckland tournament, was ideal.

Monica Seles, a four-time Australian Open champion, has been forced to withdraw from the first Grand Slam of the year because of a foot injury.
