Kaiser, Steelworkers Resume Contract Talks

From Staff

Negotiators for Kaiser Aluminum and the Steelworkers union met Tuesday, the first time the two sides have gotten together since before Christmas.

The parties met twice during the day, but by early evening neither the union halls nor Kaiser representatives had heard reports on the progress of the talks.

Negotiators are scheduled to meet through Friday to discuss a new labor contract to replace the one that expired Sept. 30, 1998. As a result of the dispute, 2,900 Steelworkers have been off the job at five Kaiser plants for more than 15 months.

Also on Tuesday, Steelworker John Goodman was honored by the King County jail staff for saving the flag in front of the detention center during December’s World Trade Organization protests in Seattle.

Three officers from the jail came to Spokane to hand the flag to the Vietnam veteran in a ceremony held at the post office downtown. In attendance were Steelworkers, Goodman’s family, several war veterans, Spokane City Councilwoman Cherie Rodgers and Judy Olsen from Sen. Patty Murray’s office.
