Sp Boys Upset Ferris
GSL boys
The Shadle Park boys basketball team likes wild games.
That’s when the Highlanders are at their best, says coach Darcy Weisner.
Shadle scored 26 points in the fourth quarter and erased a 10-point deficit on the way to a 66-63 Greater Spokane League upset of second-ranked Ferris on Friday night at Shadle. The Saxons lost for the second time this week.
The Highlanders avoided overtime when Saxons’ junior Erik Benzel missed the first of a three-point free-throw attempt with no time on the clock.
Benzel intercepted the Highlanders’ inbounds pass and was fouled taking a desperation shot.
Weisner said the Saxons executed well on the last-second play and Shadle did a poor job on defense.
But the crowd came through.
“I have never heard the gym that loud, our fans did a great job (of shaking him up),” Weisner said.
He said his team took some risks and they paid off.
“Our team gets in a helter-skelter mood,” he said. “We take more chances and we do well in these situations.”
Shadle’s Shaun Rowe scored 10 of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter, when Shadle was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.
Benzel finished with a game-high 22 points and made 4 of 6 free throws. Saxons sophomore Sean Mallon had 10 of his 20 in the first quarter.
Ferris was 49 percent from the field and Shadle 50 percent.
