Tormey Takes Pullman Star With Him
Former University of Idaho football coach Chris Tormey decided to take a little piece of the Palouse with him to Nevada.
Pullman High linebacker J.D. Morscheck orally committed to Tormey and the Wolfpack on Monday night. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Morscheck was the center of a hotly contested battle between the Vandals and Wolfpack. Washington State and other Pacfic-10 Conference schools were in on Morscheck early, but a recurring shoulder injury scared some of the bigger schools away.
“It was a really tough decision for me,” Morscheck said. “I’m sure that some people will say some things about me not going to Washington State. But I felt like Nevada was a place where, if football didn’t work out, that the academics fit what I wanted to do.”
Morscheck also feels Tormey’s coaching style and defensive philosophy fit what he wants to do on the field.
“It’s a brand new staff, and there is a lot of excitement there about what they are going to do,” said Morscheck. “And I know that if I come in and I’m better than the guy ahead of me, the coaching staff is going to give me the opportunity to play right away.”
That opportunity was not available to Morscheck at WSU. The Cougars are stacked at linebacker for the next few years and added another one over the weekend.
DeShon Weaver, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker from Compton College, has enrolled at Washington State. Weaver, who reportedly has run a 4.58-second 40-yard-dash, has three years to play two seasons.
The Cougars also picked up oral commitments from two defensive backs on Tuesday. Hamza Abdullah (6-foot-3, 200) of Pomona High in California and Jason David (5-10, 175) of Charter Oak in Covina, Calif., have both said they will play for the Cougars, according to Greg Biggins of pacwestfootball.com.
Abdullah, who had 115 tackles, three interceptions and eight forced fumbles, chose WSU over Oregon State.
David, a running back/defensive back in high school, still has a trip to Wisconsin scheduled and is considered a soft commitment.
