U-Hi Ends G-Prep’S Win Streak
Heart-breaking loss after numbing, heart-breaking loss, the University girls basketball team kept the faith.
That faith was rewarded Tuesday night when the Titans tripped eighthranked Gonzaga Prep 61-59 at U-Hi, ending the Bullpups’ 10-game winning streak in the Greater Spokane League.
“Sports are weird,” U-Hi heroine Megan Owen said. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Somebody has to lose. Tonight was our night.”
Titans coach Mark Stinson said, “Surprisingly, they were OK (despite the losses). They’re a veteran team for the most part, a mature team. They came to practice every day ready to play, but I’m sure it was in the back of their mind.”
Owen swished two free throws with 12 seconds left to ice the game before Prep added a basket at the buzzer.
“We do that every day in practice,” Owen said of pressure free throws. “He trains us to be in that position. There’s no place I’d rather be in that situation than at the free throw line.”
Stinson said he looked at the players on the floor and couldn’t see any he would take out because of free-throw inadequacies when the Titans got the ball after a Prep turnover with 15 seconds left.
“I can’t get them to run lines at the end of practice because they always make their free throws,” he said.
Vanessa Shelton had hit a short pull-up jumper from the right baseline at 40 seconds to give U-Hi a 59-57 lead.
Prep’s 10-game winning streak started with a 76-74 triple overtime win over University. That was one of four games the Titans had lost by a total of seven points.
“I don’t know that we had so much confidence in winning but confidence as a team,” Owen said. “Losing those close games, we knew we could play. We just needed a win.”
The Bullpups were hurt when reserve guard Stephanie Stone went to a hospital for X-rays on a possible broken collarbone before the game. Then they lost 6-foot post Katie Gillum about 4 minutes in. Gillum also was taken to a hospital to have a possible broken foot X-rayed.
“That didn’t hurt,” Stinson said. “That was just bad luck there.”
“We just got tired. They played great the whole game,” Prep coach Mike Arte said.
“They’re just the team that comes out and pounds us around and we didn’t respond. We ran out of gas and our substitution pattern was messed up.”
Gillum’s loss was really noticed when Stephanie Housam got into foul trouble.
Carly Barnes and Juliann Laney tried to carry the team. Barnes had 10 of her 20 in the second quarter and Laney had 11 of her 17 in the third to go with nine rebounds. But they really only had three points in the fourth quarter as Prep went more than 4 minutes without a point as U-Hi scored eight to lead 55-51 with 3:36 to play.
Owen finished with 16 points and Sara Steblaj had 15.
“We had intensity the whole game,” Stinson said.
