Girls Scouts Honor Heroic Sixth-Grader

The Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. awarded Renee Rodgers the bronze cross - one of the highest honors given to Girl Scouts - for risking her life to save someone else’s.

The sixth-grader pulled her younger brother and sister from a house fire last year.

When Rodgers was 11 last January, she and her mother, Jamie, were in the living room when flames suddenly exploded from their gas furnace. The dryer at the back of the house also caught fire.

Her brother Zachary, then 4, and sister Mashayla, then 2, were in high chairs in the kitchen between the two blazes.

Rodgers reacted quickly. While her mother called 911, she ran past the furnace and into the kitchen, got her siblings out of their chairs, ran back past the furnace fire and out of the house.
