* Scholarship searching on the Internet: A two-hour workshop presented by the Spokane East Side Branch Library takes place tonight at 6:30. The workshop is designed to help high school students learn about applying for financial aid, and finding sources on the Internet. For more information, call (509) 444-5375.

* Black History Month: The deadline for the annual Black History Month essay contest sponsored by Eastern Washington University is just four days away. Entries must be postmarked by Friday. For details on how to enter, call (509) 359-2205. Winners will receive cash prizes and will be featured Feb. 19 at EWU’s Black History Month Banquet. The guest speaker at the banquet will be A.K. Black, a San-Francisco-based rap lyricist, performer, speaker and “edutainer.” The banquet begins at 6 p.m. and costs $25 per person. Advance reservations are required.

* Teen cross-country ski day: Youth ages 12 to 18 are invited to join the Spokane Parks and Recreation Outdoor Program for a cross-country ski trip on Feb. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $14, which includes transportation, skis and lessons. Call (509) 625-6200 to register.

* Job shadow opportunities: Middle and high school students who want to spend a few hours shadowing employees at area businesses will have the chance to do so during Job Shadow Week, March 20-24, sponsored by Junior Achievement, US West and the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce. Students interested in participating must register by Feb. 9. Businesses that would like to offer job shadows for students must register by Feb. 4. Both should call (509) 624-7114.

* Web site competition: Middle and high school students may enter the “Nature Greets Technology Web Site Contest” being sponsored by the Seattle SuperSonics, Gateway Companies Inc., JanSport Incorporated, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

To enter, students must research and develop a Web site on one of two themes: “Preventing Fires is Everyone’s Responsibility” and “Trees to Sea — Journey of the Wild Salmon.” Entries must be submitted by June 1. Prizes include Gateway computers, mountain bikes, gift certificates, backpacks and paid registrations for the one-week Natural Resources Youth Camp June 25-July 1.
