Othello

The school board will offer agriculture classes at the junior high starting next year, touching on aquaculture, horticulture and environmental science.

Ferry County

Memorial Hospital is looking for someone to do maintenance work. Currently, the hospital contracts these services through the county.

Grant County

Royal City

Mike Brown says he will fight a $30,000 fine from the Department of Ecology. The fine is in response to a Nov. 17 mint fire that produced such thick smoke it caused three car accidents. Brown says the fire was accidental.

Lincoln County

Davenport

There will be no new sewer hookups in Davenport. The City Council voted unanimously to implement a moratorium until its sewer capacity problems can be solved.

Pend Oreille County

Cusick

The Cusick and Newport school districts don’t believe the state distributes federal timber dollars fairly. The two districts have joined a federal lawsuit claiming they should receive more money. If the schools are successful, Cusick could see an extra $60,000 and Newport $150,000 in federal timber sale funds.

The Asphalt Paving Association of Washington has selected 32 engineering students from Washington State University, Gonzaga, University and the University of Alaska to receive $1,800 scholarships.

The city has purchased a large radar monitor that will display how fast motorists are going. The CHS metal shop class constructed a mobile trailer for the monitor.

The Whitman County Planning Commission is seeking public input on how to revise zoning for rural residences in the agricultural zone, particularly the required three-year wait before ag land can be approved for house construction.

Building permits purchased in December in Benewah County and the city of St. Maries generated $3,642.

Bonner County

The Bonner County Board of Commissioners will hold a public meeting to discuss the Family Exemption Parcel Retention Ordinance at 2 p.m Thursday at the courthouse.

Bonners Ferry

Several local merchants have donated materials for the Seventh-day Adventist school’s playground equipment. Les Schwab donated three large tires, Bi-Rite and local residents supplied wood to make a teeter-totter. Neyumayer’s Mill donated boards for soccer goals. Shawn Winters built the equipment.

Kootenai County

Kootenai County will be replacing the weigh station scales at the Fighting Creek Landfill. The new scales will be replaced in the evening to avoid interruption of service.

Marine Corps Pfc Amos Frisbie recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Frisbie is a 1999 Kellogg High School graduate and the son of George Frisbie, Kellogg.

About 700 Northern Lights customers in Troy lost electricity Saturday due to water damage at a Bonneville Power Administration substation.
