Ewu Considering In-State Tuition Hike

Eastern Washington University’s Board of Trustees is considering a 3.6 percent tuition increase for in-state students for the next school year.

The proposed increase was presented Friday by Mary Voves, Eastern’s vice president for business and finance, at the board’s monthly meeting.

The board is scheduled to vote on the proposal Feb. 25.

In-state undergraduate students currently pay $2,700 in annual tuition. It would be raised to $2,793 under the proposal.

Ordinarily, tuition hikes at the state’s public colleges and universities are set by the Legislature. Last year, however, lawmakers granted local tuition-setting authority to the schools’ governing boards - allowing tuition for 1999-2000 to be increased by up to 4.6 percent, and then up to an additional 3.6 percent for 2000-2001.

This school year, Eastern opted for a 3 percent increase, the lowest increase among the state’s public institutions. Most other schools sought the maximum 4.6 percent increase.

Should Eastern’s Board of Trustees approve the tuition increase next month, Eastern will still remain the best value among Washington’s four-year schools, Voves said.
