Lc Students Shine At WSU Math Day

Lewis and Clark High School students scored high marks at the Washington State University’s annual Math Day.

Junior Eric Malm took third place in individual competition and will receive a $2,000 scholarship to attend WSU.

Malm is the son of Susan and James Malm, Spokane.

Also, Lewis and Clark took first place in the team competition of the large-school division.

The team members are Ryan Wickre, son of Nancy and Curtis Wickre; Joel Pierce, son of Donna and Bruce Pierce; and Silas Hilliard, son of Kathy and Dan Hilliard.

The team is coached by Gregg Sampson.

Several students from Mt. Spokane High School were accepted into All State musical groups on the basis of taped auditions.

Saxophonists Chris Parkin, Erik Laiho and April Nunn were accepted into the wind ensemble.

Trombonist Evan Smith and guitarist Mike Frederick were accepted into the honor jazz band.

The Lake City High School Drama Club won top honors at the State Drama Club Competition.

Two ensemble humorous teams tied for first place and Kristin Scaton took fourth place in costume design for her effort in a production of “Godspell.”

The school received fourth-place honors in the A Division Schools sweepstakes category.

Participating LCHS actors include Chad Longo, Jull Ashkinos, Joy Turner, Katrina Mathers and Zach Mathers. The LCHS drama coach is Sandra Scaton.

The Lake City High School Speech and Debate Team recently earned the Sweepstakes Trophy at the Mt. Spokane Meet, beating out competitors from Cheney, Mead, Spokane, Tri-Cities and Coeur d’Alene.

Lake City students won for the best three speakers and received the top three awards for novice policy teams, earning a total of 18 trophies and medals.

In Varsity Team Competition, Lake City teams took first and third place and were undefeated in the two-day event. The varsity team members are Chas Phillips and Sam Thilo, and the novice team members are Will Stafford and Becky Thilo.

Phillips was named the Outstanding Senior Speaker.

LCHS also received first- and second-place honors in the Junior Division dramatic interpretation and interpretive reading; first in impromptu speaking; second for dual team; and second and third in humorous interpretation; and a finalist in senior interpretive reading.
