Peer Educator Conference Scheduled At Gu

Shannon Brewer Shadle Park

Are you a dedicated individual who wants to make a difference in society? Here’s your chance. This year’s A Day Away Peer Educators Conference is for all high school students.

What is a peer educator? A peer educator is an individual dedicated to advocating and supporting his or her peers in making healthy life choices. Peer educators are individuals who care about their future and the future of their friends.

What will we do at the conference? At the conference, youths will have the opportunity to attend two of the following workshops:

Interactive Theater - Love, Hate, and Fear are just a few emotions that weigh down our decisions. Using theater, learn to discover what your decisions are made of. Conflict resolution - Young lives are full of stress and conflict, learn how to deal with confrontational individuals in a peaceful manner.

Media Literacy - We hear the Lights … Camera .. . Action, but what aren’t we hearing? Learn the tricks of advertising and break through the manipulation.

Presentation Skills - It’s time to get dirty. Interactively discover your biases and learn how to verbally and non-verbally include all audiences. Along with workshops, youths will be joined by keynote speaker Dennis Mitchell and six local peer education groups.

The conference will be held in the Schoenburg Center at Gonzaga University on Feb. 9 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
