Campground Closed After Reservation Fire
A brush fire on the Spokane Indian Reservation was extinguished Saturday, though one campground near the site of the fire remains closed.
The fire was sparked Wednesday by a lightning strike. It burned about 110 acres of grass, brush and sparse timber in steep terrain overlooking the Spokane River about 10 miles southwest of Wellpinit, according to an Interior Department news release. More than 100 firefighters from state, local and federal agencies battled the blaze. It was declared 100 percent contained Saturday morning. Crews worked Saturday to cover burned ground with natural debris and build berms to prevent erosion on burned ground.
The Jackson Cove campground has been closed to the public. The Docks campground remains open. Officials urge people camping in the reservation to use caution with fireworks and campfires.
