On The Web: Researching Species
Nine of the world’s 29 orders of mammals are found in the state of Washington, including bats, primates, rodents, marine mammals, and carnivores, among other groups.
Such information for Washington and beyond is simple to find and expand upon at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture (University of Washington-Seattle) Web site.
In the Mammals of Washington section of the Web site, nine mammalian orders are described in 148 separate species’s accounts. Each account gives the natural history of the species (characteristics, diet, behaviors, habitat), as well as its geographic distribution, and in some cases, phylogeography.
Other sections describe research on the species.
