Two Spokane Golfers Qualify For Amateur
Spokane golfers Reid Hatley and Brandon Smith, teammates at the University of Arizona, have qualified for the Pacific Coast Amateur Aug. 1-4 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Hatley of Manito and Smith of MeadowWood both shot 3-under-par 141 to win the qualifying tournament at Willows Run in Redmond, Wash. Also advancing on Washington’s three-man team is .D. Kocher of Meridian Valley, who carded a 142.
University of Idaho Vandal boosters are having a fund-raising golf tournament at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course on July 14.
Cost for the Vandal Floating Green Scramble is $200, which includes greens fees, cart, tee prize, range balls, one admission to the Lakefront Scholarship barbecue, and other Vandal golf prizes.
Registration is at 1 p.m. with play beginning at 2 p.m.
A portion of all fees goes to fund Vandal athletic scholarships. Tickets for the barbecue are $25. The barbecue is from 7-9 p.m. at the golf course.

Baseball
Bryce Bozman of Reardan High has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Blue Mountain Community College. Bozman led the Bi-County League with 27 stolen bases. He was the Bi-County all-league shortstop and was named to the Class B all-state team.

Forty-four Eastern Washington University student-athletes have been selected to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic teams for the 2000 spring sports season.
The spring awards bring the total number of Big Sky All-Academic honors won by Eagles to 128 for the 1999-2000 school year.
To qualify, athletes must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or a 3.20 average for the previous three quarters. They also must have participated in at least half of their team’s competitions.

Sophomore Roger Flynn led a list of six Washington State golfers named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team. Two players from the men’s team and four from the women’s were honored.
Flynn’s 4.0 grade point average in mechanical engineering earned him a spot on the Academic All-American team in May. The Boise native had the highest GPA of any player selected for the Pac-10 All-Academic men’s team. Flynn was joined by teammate Jon Reehoorn, 3.18 GPA in Communications, who was named to the second team.
Senior Jenny Ballou, junior Jennifer Dodd, and sophomores Tasha Browner and Becky Greggain received honorable mention for Washington State.
Stanford matched WSU with six selections to the men’s and women’s teams to lead the conference.
Arizona sophomore Brandon Smith, from Central Valley, made the first team. A finance major, he has a 3.67 GPA.
Gonzaga University had seven rowers on the first team Pac-10 All-Academic team, including: Sam Howard, business administration; Colin Thalhofer, biology; Kristen Allison, biochemistry; Bonnie Corbin, biology; Vicki Olson, biology; Liz Rhode, civil engineering; Jill Vimont, biology.
Jeff Pilcher has joined the University of Idaho athletic department staff an assistant athletic director for regional sales in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene region. Pilcher, a 1993 UI graduate, returns to Moscow after two years as the corporate account executive for the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes. He also worked for the Idaho Stampede of the Continental Basketball Association and the Spokane Chiefs.
Volleyball
Lindsay Murphy (Mead/University of Oregon) of the Spokane Splash was selected as the Renaissance Girl at Volleyball Festival 2000 in Sacramento and Davis, Calif. The selection awards performance, academics and community service. Murphy gave a opening ceremony speech before 10,000 people.
The Spokane Splash/Adidas U-12 volleyball team finished 10th at the nation’s largest volleyball tournament, Volleyball Festival 2000. The Splash placed above all other U-12 teams in the Northwest Region of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
The team was coached by Shawn Wilson and Heather Wilson. The players: Oceana Bush, Cassie Dobson, Alexandra Farley, Kaitlyn Farley, Kimberly Furman, Rachel Fleetwood, Amy Herron, Mara Ryan, Nicole Solum, Lara Vagstad and Hannah Zimmerman.
