Suspected Pipe Bombs Found In Pickup
Five devices found in a pickup stopped by a sheriff’s deputy Monday night appeared to be pipe bombs, a Kootenai County sheriff’s spokesman said.
A deputy suspected the pickup’s driver was drunk, and stopped the truck on a road in the southwestern portion of the county near Lake Coeur d’Alene, Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.
The deputy arrested the driver for investigation of drunken driving, then returned to the pickup and found the devices inside, Wolfinger said.
A passenger in the vehicle also was taken into custody, Wolfinger said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobbaco, and Firearms was notified, and a Spokane-based bomb squad removed the devices.
The pickup’s driver was booked into the Kootenai County Jail. He was identified as Jason J. Hauff, 23, who’s based in California with the Navy.
Charges relating to the explosive devices were pending.
