Cheney To Fix Eight Streets

The public works department in Cheney has selected eight residential streets for work this summer in the second year of a voter-approved street repair program.

For the most part, streets judged to be failing are being fixed first, said Don MacDonald, director of public works.

The city used a rating system of zero to 100 to decide which streets were in the worst condition and logged the information onto a computer spreadsheet.

Many of the segments selected were rated in the single digits and teens.

Some segments in better condition were scheduled for work because it is less expensive to fix them before they deteriorate, MacDonald said.

“If we have street segments which will be failing in the next couple of years if unattended to, which are in the same area as failed street segments, we try to address those street segments at the same time as the failed street segments,” MacDonald said in a memo.

The work includes resurfacing on the streets in better condition. The worst streets will undergo excavation to reconstruct the street bed and receive new paving.

Voters in 1998 approved an increase in taxes on natural gas and electrical consumption from 6 percent to 10 percent to pay for street repairs over 14 years. At the time, the increase was projected to raise $240,000 a year.

Here is a list of streets scheduled for work:

B Street from its southeast terminus to Seventh Street.

Scenic Heights from Salnave Road to Ridgeview Drive and from Gary Street to Hill View Drive.

Skyview Place from Summit Drive to Summit Drive.

Walker Drive from Gregory Drive to Holladay Drive.

West Third Street from K Street to Union Street.

Washington Court from Elm Street to its northern terminus.

North Ninth from Elm to Cedar streets and from Oakland Street to Summit Drive.

Sunrise Drive from North Eight Street to its northern terminus.
