A fire started by fireworks early Wednesday morning caused $225,000 damage at a Lynnwood elementary school, authorities said.

The fire at Hilltop Elementary School destroyed roofing material stored in a covered play area but did not spread to the main part of the school, said Fire District One spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.

Four teenagers who had been setting off fireworks on the school grounds reported the fire at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Hynes says the four - ages 16 to 19 - were questioned and are believed responsible for starting the fire. The case will be referred to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office.

Plywood, tar and insulation were destroyed along with the play structure. No one was injured.

The school is in the Edmonds School District.
