Adams County Ritzville

Today is the last day for locals to purchase advance tickets for Saturday’s Ritzville Blues Festival. Cost is $15 for 16 and over. Tickets at the gate will be $20, but locals get a break because of their great support for this event filled with fine blues, brews and barbecues.

Ferry County Republic

John Barnett, owner of Whispering Pines Resort, wants county commissioners to reduce the speed limit on the road to his business near state Highway 395 as a safety measure. The county suggested reducing the speed to 25 mph and posting a sign, though other alternatives were discussed.

No formal action was taken.

Lincoln County Davenport

Residents are invited to the July Jesus Jam at 7 p.m. Saturday. The event is being put together by the Trinity Praise Band from Trinity Bible Fellowship. The band promises at least an hour of praise and worship favorites, plus several songs from today’s hottest Christian recording artists. The event is at 1101 First Street - six blocks south of Berry Bowl. The jam is the first of the “Saturday Nite Abundantly Live” concert series.

Pend Oreille County Ione

The recent Big Meadow Festival was a smashing success. The children’s fishing derby was well attended with several of the 45 youngsters winning prizes. The kids not only got to fish, but tell fish stories and cast for accuracy. The “cast-off” was very popular with Wesley Ostby, 8, of Deer Park, who won first place for the second year in a row. Winner of the 9-to-13 age group was Spokane’s Jessica Rychalski. The event was sponsored by the Sullivan Lake Ranger District.

Students representing Eastern Washington University placed in the top 32 of 704 teams competing in the 2000 Hallmark Cards Students in Free Enterprise International Exposition and Career Opportunity Fair held recently in Kansas City, Mo. The EWU SIFE team competed against more than 150 teams made up of more than 1,800 students from Albania, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, the United States and Uzbekistan.

Stevens County Colville

Artists are needed for the seventh annual ARTWALK, Aug. 1-5. Over 35 downtown stores are expected to participate in the event. Creators of all forms of art are invited to call (509) 684-3178 for details.

Whitman County Pullman

The Pullman Fire Department answered three calls on the Fourth of July to fires set off by fireworks. There were no injuries or major damage. Crews responded to 1405 NE Merman Drive for a juniper bush fire. A grass fire started near the intersection of Yates and Ann at 8:52 p.m. and another followed at 9:41 p.m. at 1025 Clifford.

Benewah County St. Maries

St. Maries School District hired four people recently. Two are high school teachers: Shayla Lindstrom, physical education, and Jessie Mercado, English. Two summer janitorial positions were filled by Frances Wilkinson and Denise Bentcik.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Organic livestock production and guard animals - along with organic vegetables, herbs and flowers - will viewed and discussed during a tour at two farms, the Spring Creek Organic Farm and Greentree Naturals Farm. The tour, set for noon to 6 p.m. July 15, is the first in a three-part series titled Rural Roots - Summer 2000 Farm Tours and Workshops. The tours are sponsored by the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension and Washington State University Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources. Cost is $25; a meal is included. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The Spokane Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is organizing a North Idaho chapter. The nonprofit organization is a support group for mothers who have lost children through alcohol-related accidents, as well as a victim’s advocate in the court system and lobbyist against repeat DUI offenders. A meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. July 13 at the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, 3818 Schreiber Way. Call (509) 482-0405.

Shoshone County Kellogg

The City Council approved several items requested by the Police Department. New uniforms for officers were approved and include a green shirt and tan pants with a green stripe and new patches. The hire of Todd Flood for the open police officer position was approved. Flood is state certified, a member of the special response team and has 2 years experience. Members also approved a raise for Officer Frank Bates following his completion of additional training.
