Late-Models May Pack ‘Em In

A capacity crowd is expected at Stateline Speedway Sunday for the first Washington Trust Bank Idaho 200.

The race for late model Superstocks is expected to draw more than 30 teams, competing for $30,000 in prize money. Only 20-22 cars will start, promoter Joe Doellefeld said this week.

Capacity at the quarter-mile banked oval is 5,000 people. “We filled it on the 3rd (of July),” Doellefeld said Wednesday. “We expect that’ll be the case again.”

Tickets are available at Trustworthy Hardware on Seltice Way in Post Falls.

Kevin Richards, the Spokane driver who’s coming off a 12th-place finish in a Winston West event Tuesday in Portland, is among the 23 drivers who registered early.

Todd Witham of Veradale and Brad Rhoads of Kennewick will renew their battle for points in the interstate racing series. Each has won two of four interstate series events split between Stateline and Yakima.

Pre-registered drivers also include Marty Pfaffle of Moses Lake, defending champion in Northwest modifieds, and Mike Sauls of Puyallup, Wash., who has a history of winning superstock events.

They’ll begin to sort themselves out at 6 tonight. Qualifying groups based on times will be established, followed by 40-lap qualifying events. The evening will end with a fireworks display.

On Sunday, a consolation qualifier will determine the final starters for the 1 p.m. feature. The feature is divided into 100-lap segments to allow drivers to fuel and take on tires and repairs. First-place purse money is $5,500. Prize money will also be at stake in qualifying events.

Hobby cars and mini-trucks are part of Sunday’s activity.
