Washtucna

Waste Management and the Organization to Preserve Agricultural Lands have reached an out-of-court settlement on the permitting of a regional solid waste landfill near Washtucna after eight years of court battles. The confidential settlement includes additional well protection for landowners. In exchange, OPAL will not challenge Waste Management in court on pending and future permits if Waste Management pursues the landfill.

The school board has approved a plan to build a new alternative high school. The current facility, leased from Big Bend Community College, is too small for the rapidly growing program. The district will pay for the new school with some of the $5 million left over from its $70 million long-range construction fund. Nearly 150 students are currently jammed into a building meant for 135, with no gym or library.

Harrington

The Harrington School District has stepped up efforts to replace music teacher Craig Johnson. The district has posted the job on the Internet and called numerous colleges and placement centers, but has had no applicants.

Pend Oreille County

Disabled bowhunter Harold Saunders is suing the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Saunders says his disability does not allow him to use a conventional compound bow for hunting, and that the law does not allow even disabled hunters to use a crossbow.

Providence Services Eastern Washington hospitals, including Holy Family Hospital, have joined a network of health-care institutions in partnership with americasdoctor.com, an Internet health information and resource system. The Web site offers current health facts, a library of medical information, clinical trial participation opportunities and a physician chat session.

Chataqua!, the annual community festival that is being held today, boasts one of the largest craft fairs in the region, as well as a parade, a fun run, entertainment and games. The craft fair will have nearly 200 booths. There will also be more than 20 food booths.

St. James Episcopal Church is holding its 71st annual Rummage Sale at WSU’s Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum next week. The sale begins Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and continues Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone wishing to donate items or request information may call Carol at 332-1846, or leave a message at the church at 332-1742. Donors may also bring items to the north side of the coliseum from Monday to Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Fred Rabe, a retired University of Idaho professor, will discuss why water bugs are important at 8:30 tonight at Hawley’s Landing Amphitheater, Heyburn State Park. Visitors are invited to meet 8 a.m. Sunday at the landing to gather water bugs and view them through microscopes.

The Idaho Prime loan program is for small-business owners who are looking to expand, modernize, build or buy commercial building. Loans of up to $150,000 may be borrowed at the prime interest rate. A logging competition will begin at 4 p.m. today with finals at 7 p.m. at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Springboard, underand overhand chopping, single- and double bucking, choker racing and more will be included. The event is organized by Boundary Search and Dive Rescue.

The third-annual classic car River City Rod Run continues today and Sunday at the Coeur d’Alene Greyhound Park. Some 500 hot rods from the region and Canada are expected. The Moscow Mayor’s Task Force on the 1912 Center will sponsor a birthday party today for the historic school building on Third Street. The city bought the 1912 building in 1997 for a community center. Tours and displays begin at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m., the task force will recognize donors who helped purchase the building, as well as anyone born in 1912 or earlier. Music will be provided by the Snake River Six and refreshments will be served.

Slippery Gulch Days may be held this year in conjunction with the Wallace All-Class Reunion, set for Aug. 11-13. The last Slippery Gulch Days was held in 1990.
