Benewah County St. Maries
Permits to cut firewood on U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management timberlands are available at the St. Joe ranger district office through Aug. 30. A $5 permit entitles the holder to a cord of wood. The office, in the federal building, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Free drama workshops will be offered from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 28 at the City Beach park by the British-American Youth Festival Theatre, known as B.A.Y.FEST. The drama/improvisation workshops will be open to people of all ages, with registration beginning at 2:30 p.m. An evening performance will be given July 29 at the Panida Theater. Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Camp Clover Bud, a free one-day camp for children 5 to 8 years old, will be held July 18 at Snow Creek Lions Club Park by the 4-H Leaders Council. Kootenai County Hauser Lake
The Idaho record for a tiger muskie was broken twice in late June. The record of 34 pounds, 8 ounces set last year by Justin Olson was topped by a 35-pounder and then topped again by a 37-pound, 13-ounce fish caught by Dave Tacher. All of Idaho’s record tiger muskies have come from Hauser Lake. The largest tiger muskie ever caught - 51 pounds, 3 ounces - was hooked in Wisconsin in 1919.
Latah County Moscow
The Palouse Ice Rink Association is trying to open an ice rink by fall. The association, which would like to build the rink at the fairgrounds, has purchased a used Zamboni for grooming the ice and has found a used chiller for making ice. Estimated cost of the project is $400,000.
Shoshone County Wallace
The Huckleberry 5-K Run/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 19 at River and Second on the bridge. Registration is $15 ($7.50 with no T-shirt) before Aug. 1 or $20 ($12 with no T-shirt) after that date. Lincoln County Libby
Kootenai Valley Head Start has been ordered to close its modular building due to a buildup of mold. A leaky roof is to blame for the mold, which can cause health problems for people with allergies. But none of the 54 students and 22 staff members have become sick from the mold, according to Marki Chandler, director of the preschool for 3- and 4-year-old children. Steps have been taken to fix the roof, but the building will be used for storage for now.
WASHINGTON
Pend Oreille County Newport
County residents will have a chance to tell state officials their views on a controversial shorelines plan. The plan, being redrafted and updated by the state Department of Ecology, has upset some residents who believe they are losing private property rights. The department will hold a public meeting next Monday at 7 p.m., but the location has not yet been determined.

Whitman County Colfax
Insurance agents have estimated the June 28 blaze in the Colfax fire station caused $1.75 million in damage. The fire damaged 10 vehicles, destroyed firefighting gear and did about $750,000 damage to the building. The city plans to purchase comparable equipment with the insurance money, and it estimates repairing the building could take up to a year. No one was injured in the fire, which investigators said was started by a faulty extension cord.
