Man Arrested After Eluding Traffic, Troopers

Most motorists seem to be handling this summer’s Interstate 90 construction crunch fairly well, but state troopers arrested a Spokane Valley man last Friday after he allegedly drove recklessly around backed-up traffic, then fled on foot after he was pulled over for the infraction.

The Washington State Patrol received a report at about noon on Friday that a car was driving recklessly along the shoulder of I-90 west of Pines Road.

When a trooper stopped the vehicle, the driver fled by jumping a fence at Spalding Auto Parts and running off through the wrecking yard.

About 30 minutes later, a trooper arrested Shaune D. Darrow, 20, 19221 E. Buckeye, on Montgomery Avenue north of the Spalding yard.

Darrow was charged with resisting arrest, three counts of criminal trespass, third-degree driving with a suspended license, refusing to cooperate with an officer and reckless driving. He also had been wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in court. All were misdemeanors.

Frustration may be high, but construction hasn’t caused an unusually high number of collisions along I-90, according to WSP spokesman Brad Hudson.

Since July 1, there have been nine collisions along the freeway between the Pines and Broadway interchanges.

“That’s about average” for that area, said Hudson.

Only one of the accidents caused injuries, and those were minor.

Last Friday morning, a vehicle flipped over the center median near Broadway. The driver suffered minor injuries, but did not require hospitalization, according to the WSP.

“The severity (of collisions) wasn’t bad for most of them because traffic was moving slowly,” he said.

Lane closures along westbound I-90 between Argonne and Broadway will continue until Sunday, while construction crews repave the outer travel lane.
