Sjo To Play Pavillion Park
The Spokane Jazz Orchestra plays straight-ahead jazz with passion and enthusiasm.
The 18-member professional orchestra performs in Liberty Lake on Saturday. The free outdoor concert will be held at Pavillion Park, starting at 7 p.m.
The orchestra, dedicated to making jazz accessible to audiences, will sprinkle well-known swing-era tunes from Count Basie, such as “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “April in Paris,” in with some lesser known Louis Armstrong songs.
“It’s still all jazz people can really identify with because they’ve heard it for so long,” said director Dan Keberle.
The performance in Pavillion Park is the second of two Spokane Jazz Orchestra outdoor summer appearances. The other was at the American Music Festival at Riverfront Parl on July 4.
Charlotte and Bill Carruthers will be guest vocalists. They performed with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Louis Armstrong at The Met in March.
“They both bring enthusiasm and tremendous authenticity to the music. They grew up with the music and they understand it,” Keberle said.
Both are children of local jazz legend Arnie Carruthers, who lives in the Spokane Valley.
The professional orchestra has been performing since 1975.
The group is excited to do a return performance at Liberty Lake. The jazz orchestra last played at the park in 1998.
“The audience there was very enthusiastic,” said Keberle. “It was more of a party atmosphere.”
