Seniors and Lawmen Together, a newly formed group, is looking for ways to help elderly people live more safely. Seven senior volunteers are taking part in the program. The group has discussed a community garden, workdays to help senior citizens with housework and yardwork, a “telephone tree” for house-bound senior citizens and a program to encourage the storing of medical information in refrigerators so Emergency Medical Service crews can find it quickly.

In an effort to promote tourism, a scenic Cultural Heritage Loop has been proposed. The route includes Rossland and Grand Forks, British Columbia; and Kettle Falls, Republic, Omak, Tonasket and Oroville, Wash.

Anyone with a sturdy pair of gloves is invited to a cleanup day July 22 at the Beezly Hills Preserve along Monument Hill. Recently purchased by the Nature Conservancy, the 4,300-acre preserve is in need of cleanup because illegal trash-dumping is fairly common there. Local farmers are giving up on a campaign, started in the 1970s, to contribute grain to be sent to needy nations. Even when the statewide Washington Wheat Campaign came to an end in the early 1990s, Creston farmers continued the effort, thanks to leader Barbara Ketel. But now Ketel says the difficulty in finding a national organization to help direct the donations has brought the program to an end.

Newport High School boys basketball coach Mitch Stratton has resigned to spend time helping his son with his basketball pursuits. Stratton also said he resigned because he wants the Grizzlies to win. “I owe it to these kids to give them a chance to win, and I don’t think that will happen with me in control,” he said.

A Spokane nonprofit organization that was established to help improve emergency medical services in Washington has set up a fund to help the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department rebuild after a blaze damaged its vehicles, equipment and station in June. The East Region Emergency Medical Service and Trauma Council and the Trauma Care Council have set up an account at Sterling Savings Bank to assist the Fire Department. Anyone wishing to help may donate at any branch of Sterling Savings Bank.

Gene and Vicki Hedlund have sold Economy Hardware to Jim and Martha Scourey, who own and operate Tenth Street Lumber. The Hedlunds have owned and operated a retail business on Main Avenue for almost 60 years.

Two fund-raisers will be held for the benefit of Kristine Ringland. The 19-year-old has had two benign brain tumors since 1996. Her parents don’t have insurance. A portion of the proceeds from Ultimate Gladiator Challenge, set for July 22 at the Sandpoint Gymnastic Area in Kootenai, will go to help the Ringlands. An auction and a dance featuring Carl Ray and the Blues Skaters, set for July 28 at the City Forum at Cedar and Third streets, also will benefit the Ringlands. The Bonners Ferry Junior Miss Program was honored as the most outstanding local program in the United States for 1999 during an awards ceremony at the National Junior Miss Conference June 26 in Mobile, Ala. At the state conference in Idaho Falls last October, the program was awarded the most outstanding local program in the state out of 36 programs.

The federal Bureau of Land Management is looking for qualified people to buy wild horses and burros rounded up on public rangelands. Interested buyers must have an adoption application approved by the BLM before the 9 a.m. Saturday sale at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
